The Cooperative Institute for Precipitation Systems (CIPS) was developed in conjunction with the following
CSTAR awards:
A Proposal to Improve Quantitative Precipitation Forecasting within the National Weather Service
Central Region, 1 May 2000 - 30 April 2003. Investigators: James T. Moore and Charles E. Graves
A Proposal to Improve Prediction of Significant Precipitation Events within the National Weather
Service Central Region, October 2003 - 30 September 2007. Investigators: James T. Moore and Charles E. Graves
We have given many presentations at national conferences and regional workshops
including presentations at the: American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conferences on
Weather Analysis and Forecasting and Severe Local Storms, annual meetings of the National
Weather Association, annual meetings of the Missouri Academy of Science, and
numerous regional workshops. We have presented our research at more than 15 different
NWS forecast offices. In addition, we have given many presentations at COMET residence
courses including the Hydrometeorology HPC/RFC course, Meteorological Services
of Canada Winter Weather course, and the six-week COMAP course given to SOOs.
CIPS sponsored a two-day workshop at Saint Louis University (SLU) in 2002.
We also collaborated with the St. Louis NWS forecast office on a severe weather
workshop for the media in the spring of 2007.
Numerous graduate students have contributed to the CIPS research effort. Sixteen
have completed their master’s degrees, and five have completed their doctorate. Of the
master’s students, five have stayed on for their doctorate, while seven have gone on to
employment with the NWS. Currently two students are working with CIPS, one is working
toward their doctorate and the other toward their master's.
