The overturning of tombstones in cemeteries was a verious effect of the
earthquake motion. The field investigation was performed about two weeks
after the earthquake. Whether the earthquake actually overturned the
tombstones was a question often answered by the fact that undecomposed
autumn leaves were beneath the stones, thus indicating that the tombstones
fell during autumn 1968. The widespread extent of overturned tombstones,
as well as decreasing occurrence with distance from Broughton suggested
that vandalism was not the cause.
