Preferred Solution

The preferred solution from an analysis of the surface-wave spectral amplitude radiation pattern, waveform inversion or first motion observations is

      STK = 120
      DIP = 40
     RAKE = -100
       MW = 4.63
       HS = 12

Context

The left panel of the next figure presents the focal mechanism for this earthquake (red) in the context of other nearby events (blue) in the SLU Moment Tensor Catalog. The right panel shows the inferred direction of maximum compressive stress and the type of faulting (green is strike-slip, red is normal, blue is thrust; oblique is shown by a combination of colors). Thus context plot is useful for assessing the appropriateness of the moment tensor of this event.

Reference

Older earthquake were studied using analog seismograms, which were digitized and analyzed. The original data are not longer available. However focal mechanism solutions based on the waveforms are given in published literature. At the same time, a given earthquake may have been analyzed independently, and the reference is given here.

For this earthquake the source reference is the following:

Eberhart-Phillips, D., R. M. Richardson, M. L. Sbar and R. B. Herrmann (1981). Analysis of the 4 February 1976 Chino Valley, Arizona Earthquake, Bull. Seism. Soc. Am. 71, 787-802.

Velocity Model

The CUS model used for the waveform synthetic seismograms and for the surface wave eigenfunctions and dispersion is as follows (The format is in the model96 format of Computer Programs in Seismology).
