Colors indicate sharp increase in the impedance (seismic velocity x density) of crustal material with depth. For example, the strong positive amplitudes near the surface are produced by the large impedance contrast from sediments to basement rocks and the colored band about halfway down is probably the crust -mantle boundary (Moho). The section crosses the San Andreas Fault (SAF) in California. Image courtesy of Lupei Zhu.
