Introduction

The purpose of this discussion is to introduce computational assignments for use in the course EASA-631 Advanced Seismology I.

This course focuses on wave propagation in plane layered media. It starts from the solution for point and line sources in an infinite acoustic medium, considers acoustic wave propagation in plane layered media and introduces wave number integration, Cagniard-de Hoop, propagator and reflection matrices. Next elastic wave generation by point and multipole sources is considered in cartesian and cylindrical coordinate systems. The techniques introduced in Chapter 3 are used to consider the layered elastic medium. Finally place-wave propagation and exotic sources are introduced. The theory and techniques learned are sufficient to solve many earth science problems and are also of value in calibrating finite element and finite difference techniques.
