Why these two sections?

• will be read the most often

• the most difficult sections to compose effectively

1. Purpose

• to disclose basic information about the paper

• to help reader decided if they need to read the paper

A Title must:

• be informative

• use the most precise words

• use the appropriate words

• use words that can be indexed

to write a title:

• start with objectives of work

• pick a rough title

• after the paper is finished, re-write the title

• write and revise abstract and revise title

• is it 8-12  words, or less?

• use words familiar to someone outside your subject

An Abstract is

• a brief account of the whole paper

• an informative summary, with final results and conclusions

• not just descriptive
