Quick Summary of Rules (Long Version):

  1. Topic this semester is open to a paper of General Interest with a publication date of 2004 or later.

  2. No SLU authors

  3. You must first check with your supervisor as to which paper to choose, and then you must show it to me, in person, 1 week before presentation.

  4. Email the .pdf of the paper to me 1 week before you present it.

  5. All talks by students must have a General Introduction, explaining concepts, before you start.

  6. All talks should be approximately 20 min (including the General Introduction), with 10 min for discussion.

  7. If you have a problem with your time slot, first try to arrange an exchange with another person in your discipline (Geol for Geology or Geop for Geophysics) - and then inform me of the change.

Do you want to impress your audience?

Make sure you read this at least once -->  Common Mistakes to Avoid

The following recommendations apply in general to the selection of papers for most graduate students; this is not an evaluation of any particular presentation!

NOT RECOMMENDED Sample Papers:

john_nature06214 -  too short (very condensed, requires supplementary material)

jordan_himalaya_gravity - too long (extended discussion, many figures, general discussion)

RECOMMENDED Sample Paper:

lupei_van_der_hilst_science - good length, number and style of figures
