COVER: Historic earthquakes known to have affected St. Louis. The location and date of each event are indicated in the boxes. Earthquake locations since 1975 are indicated by the small circles. Earthquakes in the Ozarks, southern Illinois and as well as new New Madrid contribute to the earthquake hazard at St. Louis. New USGS Hazard Map computations show that much of the hazard at St. Louis is due to future earthquakes within 50 miles of the city.
