Workshop on

HIGH PRECISION GRAVITY MEASUREMENTS

with APPLICATION TO GEODYNAMICS

and SECOND GGP WORKSHOP

--- FIRST CIRCULAR ---

Walferdange (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg)

24-26 March 1999

organized by the

European Centre for Geodynamics and Seismology (Walferdange)

in cooperation with the

Global Geodynamics Project

Scientific Committee: Organizing Committee:

  J. Hinderer (Strasbourg)   B. Ducarme (Bruxelles)
  O. Francis (Bruxelles)   N. d'Oreye (Bruxelles)
  B. Richter (Frankfurt)
  K. Gerstenecker (Darmstadt)

PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP

The purpose of this Workshop is to review the status of current high precision gravity measurements, particularly those obtained with superconducting gravimeters (SGs) and absolute gravimeters (AGs), with applications to both global Earth processes and to the mitigation of surface hazards.

The Global Geodynamics Project (GGP) began continuous operation on 1 July 1997 through a network of 17 SG stations worldwide and is scheduled to last 6 years. This will be the second GGP Workshop, and the first since the start of the campaign that is able to review the collection, processing and preliminary analysis of the data.

The sessions will feature a strong connection between SGs and AGs, particularly as regards the co-location of their measurements for the calibration of SGs and for long period geodetic and tectonic studies. Finally both types of instruments provide data for the solution of tectonic problems that arise with seismic and volcanic risk.

ORGANIZATION

The GGP will take most of the first two days of the Workshop and G-Gramophone and Natural Hazards will be discussed on day 3.

Attendance will be limited to 50 participants.

Limited funds will be available upon request for covering part of travel and subsistence expenses.
