Field Geologist, working for
Advanced Construction Techniques

Job description. "I have worked in the geotechnical field for 6 years, performing soil testing, pier drilling, soil and rock drilling, dam construction oversight, tunnel and foundation mapping.  I have also worked a solid year in the environmental industry dealing with MGP sites (manufactured gas plants) soil drilling, piezo and well installation and monitoring.  I recently just took a new job with Advanced Construction Techniques.  They specialize in grouting ...  I am the assistant QC manager.  In a nut shell, I make sure that the grouting operations are meeting specifications for the Army Corps of Engineers.

What's an interesting part of your job? "
I really enjoy working on dams.  This is the second major project that I have had the opportunity to work on.  One of the coolest things on this job, is the Intelli Cam.  This is a camera that can be lowered in to (bore) holes to image in situ rock.  It takes great quality images and is extremely useful."

Any advice for current undergraduates? "I highly suggest taking a soils class, now that SLU offers it.  It will come in handy, regardless of whether you do geotechnical or environmental work.  One more thing, pay attention in your classes.  You really will find the more you remember, the more you can impress your future boss.  Good Luck!
